Why and How to Set Goals

All of the successful people that you see in life probably set goals, such as Michael Phelps and Richard Branson,  and help to give you long-term vision and short-term motivation. It helps you to organise your time and resources to make the most of your life.

Not sure how to set goals, and how to achieve them? Read below for our top tips.

Why Should I Set Goals?

1. Creates Focus

Setting goals gives you focus on exactly what you need to spend your time and energy on, to get the maximum reward. Goals help you to prioritise and identify key actions to get where you want to be.

2. Creates Accountability

When you make goals, and share them with friends and family, you are then made accountable to act on them. By setting specific targets, you can easily see if and when you are on track.

3. Motivates You

Setting goals helps you connect yourself with your desires, and they motivate you and give you something to strive for. This is really powerful, as it redirects your focus away from negative obstacles, and reconnects you with your dreams.

How to Set Goals?

1.  Write Them Down

First, you need to decide on what you want to do or work towards, and then write this down. This increases our chances of sticking with them. Break it down to every detail and steps to achieve your bigger aim. Having several smaller goals to reach is easier and gives the feeling of success along the way. Always ensure that you goals are SMART.

S – Specific

M – Measurable

A – Attainable

R – Relevant

T – Timebound

2. Tell Someone

Not only does this make you accountable, but often when we lose interest or energy, other people can help motivate us.

3. Keep Going

It’s natural to have small setbacks along the way, but don’t let these deter you. Perseverance is key. If something isn’t working, think of something else to try that still moves you forward.

You can measure achievement of your goals and allow you to see how you’ve progressed. It will also raise your self-confidence and allow you to recognise your own ability.

4. Reward Yourself

When you reach your goal, it’s time to enjoy it. Also remember to thank those that helped you get there. When you start to achieve, it can enlarge your strength and confidence, so keep on making goals in the long term.
